It was originally a two-aisled church dating back to the 11th century. It underwent many transformations during the Rule of the Franks, such as the addition of a third nave and a narthex to the west. Its byzantine style wall paintings, well preserved, date back to the late 13th or early 14th century. On the iconostasis there is a unique icon depicting Our Lady holding Jesus on her left arm. The wall painting of Saint George is surrounded by a marble icon stand, decorated with knight heraldic symbols, typical of the Franks period. The sanctuary contains a wall painting of the bishop of Monemvasia, Peter, who attended the 7th Oecumenical Council (787 A.D.) The church is located on the top of the Castle and it is considered as one of the most significant churches of the region.
